You must bring your own sewing machine.  It must be in good working order and you need to be familiar with how your machine works.

This class teaches how to make your very first quilt using machine piecing.  This class is for beginners and covers an introduction to basic quilting tools, as well as techniques to keep you happy and healthy while starting your quilt journey.

Some of the subjects addressed will be:

  • Fabric selection - color, contrast, and character
  • Rotary cutting - blades, mats, and rulers
  • Needles and Thread - sizes, weight, and usage
  • Proper pressing techniques
  • Quilting Ergonomics - take care of your body as well as you take care of your quilt
  • Chain piecing
  • History and meaning behind the log cabin quilt
  • And many more tips and tricks as time allows

This quilt requires attending two class sessions.  In the first class we will go over fabric selection, how to cut your strips, starting the chain piecing process, and pressing techniques that won't distort your blocks.  Your homework will be to finish the 16 quilt blocks.  We normally allow 2 weeks between the first session and the second so everyone has time to finish thier blocks.  You will be given an instruction packet, as well as a business card with my cell number on it, in case you have any problems with the "homework".

In the second session, we will go over how to achieve visual "movement" in your quilt top.  We will lay out the blocks you made and go over several of the traditional and modern ways the blocks can be combined to make amazingly different quilt tops.  A digital camera will be provided so we can take pictures of your blocks in each layout, helping you to decide which design suits your tastes and fabric choices.  You will then be guided through the construction of your top in the design you choose.  Finally, we will  go over attaching a border if you feel your top needs one.

The total cost of the class is $55.00 ($27.50 per session) and must be paid in full before the first session.  That price is only for the lesson and does not include materials.  You are welcome to bring scraps from your personal fabric stash or fabric may be purchased at any fabric store.

You are welcome to contact me if you have any questions about the class.
