This is a small throw sized quilt, approximatly 52" x 63". I pieced the quilt over the holidays in 2008 and finished the quilting in March 2009 with my new longarm sewing machine.
The fabric is 100% cotton from the Fairy Frost line produced by Michael Miller. They consist of rich hues in ivory, gold, red and green with a metallic overlay of gossamer fairy wings and foliage. Some even have gold glitter scattered across the cloth, which gives the quilt a truely shimmering effect. The auto focus on the camera took away the sparkle in most of the photos, but you will be amazed when you see it in person. The backing is ivory and tan, with antique looking images of a long haired woman, pieces of hand written script, and blooming pale pink roses scattered across the surface.
I used a tan colored thread from the Bottom Line series designed by Libby Lehman for the quilting. As the quilt ages and the glitter wears away the thread will be more noticable and emphasis the quilting, but currently it blends in so well with the colors of the quilt. I used three quilting motifs in the blocks, a rose in the center, a feather in the outer edges of the ring, and a swirling corner piece where the rings interlock. I did not stitch in the ditch because I felt it would take something away from this particular quilt.
The batting is 100% cotton made by Quilters Dream. This quilt is machine washable and dryable, however these are handmade items so please use the delicate cycle and low heat. Excessive washing can cause quilts to wear faster. Also keep in mind that tossing it in the dryer will cause it to shrink a small amount (1-3%)due to the cotton batting. I happen to like this effect and feel that it gives the quilt a traditional antique feel.
The binding is a gold glitter fabric. It was done by machine using the Sharon Schamber "perfect curved binding" technique. You can see the perfect miters in the close up pictures above.
