This is a wall hanging sized quilt, approximatly 27" x 37". I pieced the quilt in February 2012 and quilted it on my longarm quilt frame in early March 2012. I have a pond in my backyard where I keep standard and butterfly koi, so I fell in love with this koi fabric as soon as I saw it.
The fabric is 100% cotton. The red, green, and yellow squares are from the Fairy Frost line produced by Michael Miller. They consist of rich hues with a metallic overlay of gossamer fairy wings and foliage, which gives the quilt a truely shimmering effect. The center koi fabric is from the Oriental Traditions line produced by Robert Kaufman. It has a metallic gold thread that outlines many of the features in the fabric and really grabs the eye. The sashing between all the blocks are a deep solid black fabric. The border is a beautiful dark green foliage print also part of the Oriental Traditions line. The backing is also solid black fabric that truely shows off the detailed quilting. The binding uses the same black fabric as the sashing and is done by machine while taking care to keep the corners mitered.
For the top quilting I used a yellow and brown variegated thread from the King Tut series designed by Superior Threads. In the bobbin I used a yellow So Fine thread that stood out against the black fabric. I used a highly stylized Japanese butterfly koi motif for the quilting. The pattern is repeated across the entire quilt for a dense pantograph. This makes the back as beautiful as the front in my opinion.
The batting is Quilters Dream Green. It is an Earth-Friendly, soft polyester batting made 100% from recycled plastic bottles. This quilt is machine washable and dryable, however these are handmade items so please use the delicate cycle and low heat. Excessive washing will cause quilts to wear faster. Also keep in mind that tossing it in the dryer will cause it to shrink a small amount the first time (1-3%) due to the cotton batting. I happen to like this effect and feel that it gives the quilt a traditional antique feel.
