You must bring your own sewing machine.  It must be in good working order and you need to be familiar with how your machine works.

This class teaches how to make a watercolor quilt using the Whims Watercolor kits.  Kits may be ordered online and come in a wide array of patterns.  In the class we will cover building the gridwork and easy techniques for fusible applique.

Some of the subjects addressed will be:

  • Fabric selection - contrast and value gradation
  • Fusible gridwork
  • Proper pressing techniques
  • Pattern transfer and Pressing sheets
  • History and meaning behind the watercolor quilt
  • And many more tips and tricks as time allows

This quilt requires attending two class sessions.  In the first class we will go over fabric contrast and value, how to layout your gridwork to create interest and flow in the background, transfering your patterns for applique.  Your homework will be to finish cutting out all your applique peices and complete the sewing on your gridwork.  We normally allow 2 weeks between the first session and the second so everyone has time to finish thier blocks.  You will be given an instruction packet, as well as a business card with my cell number on it, in case you have any problems with the "homework".

In the second session, we will go over how to build up your applique using foreground and layering, depending on which kit you purchase.  We will use steam a seam and pressing sheets to build your applique prior to placing it on your quilt top.  You will then be guided through the construction of your top in the design you choose.  Finally, we will go over attaching a border if you feel your top needs one.  A solid color fabric is generally recommended for the border of watercolor quilts so it does not compete with the watercolor fabrics.

The total cost of the class is $30.00 ($15.00 per session) and must be paid in full before the first session.  That price is only for the lesson and does not include materials.  You will need to purchase the kits prior to the class.  You are welcome to bring scraps from your personal fabric stash to make your quilts individual, but the kits come with all the fabric for the grid background and applique.

You are welcome to contact me if you have any questions about the class.
